OVF Naturalist Kim Gaffett helped this little lost Dovekie get back to the water on Block Island. Built for a life at sea, their legs are set so far back on their bodies that they can't walk very well on land, and can become stranded during heavy storms.

OVF Naturalist brings us two Northern Flickers -- a male and a female -- and points out small differences in their markings and demeanor. Both birds tried drilling into Kim's hand, but thankfully, were unsuccessful!

A Wilson's Storm-Petrel came into Block Island on a fishing boat last summer - tired and a little wet. But after a night ashore, it was ready to head back to sea. Kim Gaffett takes a moment to share this cool bird with us before releasing it.

Bird banders place uniquely numbered metal bands on many types of birds, hoping that they will be recaptured so we can learn more about their migration patterns. During the Spring bird banding season, OVF Naturalist Kim Gaffett had an infrequent visitor to her research station: a Black-billed Cuckoo. It's not as colorful as its yellow-billed cousin, but still a long-distance migrant from South America. Both cuckoos are known to feast on tent caterpillars.

Dovekie Rescue! This little seabird got blown into the middle of Block Island and had to be rescued. It was in fine health; their legs are just too far back for them to take off from dry land. TNC's Associate State Director Scott Comings gives us a close look at a really cool bird before returning it to the ocean. Dovekies spend the winter along the North Atlantic coast, then fly to the High Arctic to breed.
