At 5.5 weeks old, the osprey nestlings at the power company platform are ready to be banded. So many thanks to the company staff for gathering the young osprey (utilizing the bucket truck) one at a time to be banded. #ospreynestlings #blockisland #BIUD #osprey #ovfnaturalist Here Tom Brown operates the truck and Evan Carey takes good care of the young osprey. Thanks also to Tom Durden, Jim Stockman, and Jeff Wright for all their help and support on the ground and behind the s

These young osprey were 5 weeks old on July 1st & 2nd. It is always surprising how fast they grow. In this photo one of the nestling is "standing" - my what big feet you have. And the other is stretching and exercising its wings. It is almost shocking how long those wings are now. #osprey #BIUD #ospreynestling #blockisland #ovfnaturalist

These 2 nestlings are growing at an almost unbelievable rate. The first photo in this post was taken on June 23 when they were 1 day short of 4 weeks old. The second photo was taken on June 24 at 4 weeks old. At this stage the nestlings were mostly "standing" on their tarsus (lower leg) not their feet. And they are still being fed by the female, who picks a piece of fish and feeds it to them. Soon they should start picking and ripping off their own morsels of fish brought to

My how they grow. These 2 nestlings are 10 & 11 days old. They are wobbly, but definitely getting stronger and bigger. Mostly they eat and then crash asleep with a belly full into a "fish comma".

Yay! The second egg hatched and now there are 2 nestlings. Keep checking the web cam, it is amazing how fast these babies will grow. In this image the male had just brought a small fish to the nest. First the female ate, and then she fed bits to the babies.

Happy Memorial Day. We are celebrating with the observation that the 1st osprey chick has hatched. The image is a bit blurry - thus the red circle helping to highlight the new being. And hopefully the second egg will also hatch in the next day or two. However, in 2023 there were 2 eggs but only one hatched. The successful hatching of only one egg is not unusual for the first year of a pair's nesting. #osprey #blockisland #asri #thenatureconservancy #ovfnaturalist

Here the male and female are switching egg-sitting places. This pair has been taking turns on the eggs pretty regularly. It is getting close to hatching time. Osprey generally incubate their eggs for 36 - 42 days. It is hard to know when she started sitting in earnest. Taking a guess here: look for hatchlings around May 28. #blockisland #osprey #natureblockisland

Happy Earth Day. Look what we see - a second egg under the female osprey. We are not exactly sure when it was laid, but I'm guessing on...

When I first noticed that the female has a band on her leg. I automatically assumed that this bird is the same as last year's (2023)...

It's a cold, rainy, breezy day on BI. The female is standing with the egg, but soon settles down to keep it warm as the male stands by -...

Finally the osprey pair at the power company have produced an egg. How many more will there be?

Q. Why is one osprey sitting on the other? A. They are mating! Hope for eggs soon. Thanks to Elspeth Crawford in Edinburgh, Scotland for...

There have been several reports over the past 3 days of both male and female osprey being in residence on the Power Co. pole. This photo...
